DreamWorks Animation Signs Distribution Deal With Fox | The Wrap ...

DreamWorks Animation will release its films through 20th Century Fox, the studio said Monday.?

The deal is for five years, and Fox will assist with marketing and distribution both in the international and domestic markets.

?[Fox Co-Chairmen] Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman have built a world-class distribution team, and we are excited to apply their expertise, robust infrastructure and global resources so that DreamWorks Animation?s films can reach their fullest possible potential over the next five years," Jeffrey Katzenberg, DreamWorks Animation CEO, said in a statement.

The animation house behind "Kung Fu Panda" and "Shrek" has been looking for a new home since announcing in August 2011 that it was ending its distribution deal with Paramount.

The studio?s board of directors rejected a proposal from Paramount to extend its distribution pact for another year, once its deal expired this year. Its upcoming feature "Rise of the Guardians" will be the final film it releases through Paramount.

Under the terms of the agreement, Fox will receive a distribution fee on worldwide theatrical and home video grosses,? as well as on international television and on certain digital deals.

DreamWorks Animation will retain the rights to distribute its product in the domestic television windows without paying a fee to Fox.

Fox did not reveal how its fee will be structured. However, negotiations with Paramount reached an impasse after the studio told DreamWorks Animation that it would only renew its deal if it gets paid more than the 8 percent fee it received for its original pact, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap.

"Starting in 2013, DreamWorks Animation content will be distributed in the more traditional markets under a fee structure that is similar to our existing arrangement with our current distributor,? Katzenberg said in a statement. ?However, our new agreement with Fox presents more favorable economics overall for DreamWorks Animation because we are taking advantage of lower costs associated with the emerging digital distribution landscape and managing domestic television distribution in-house.?

To grab DreamWorks Animation, Fox beat out such suitors as Sony. There was also speculation that the studio might self-distribute.

After Paramount launched its own animation division last year, it felt it no longer needed DreamWorks Animations' releases to pad out its schedule.

Fox already owns a successful animation division of its own, anchored by Connecticut-based Blue Sky Studios, which Fox bought in 1997. Fox Animation has produced and distributed the ?Ice Age? franchise, which has accounted for more than $2 billion in global box office receipts.

Its other major hit was ?Rio,? the Brazil-based toon, featuring the voices of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway. A sequel, directed by Blue Sky?s Carlos Saldanha, is slated for 2014.

DreamWorks Animation has launched several franchises since its inception, including ?Kung Fu Panda,? ?Shrek? and ?Madagascar.? Its latest film, ?Madagascar 3: Europe?s Most Wanted,? has grossed more than $550 million at the global box office this summer.

Its upcoming projects include ?The Croods,? ?Turbo? and sequels to ?How to Train Your Dragon? and ?Kung Fu Panda,? which will now fall to Fox.

Updated 5:18 p.m. ??A Republican Senate nominee found himself in hot water on Sunday for suggesting that instances of "legitimate rape" rarely results in pregnancy.?

Rep. Todd Akin, a Republican who's locked in a hard-fought campaign in Missouri to unseat Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, was answering a question regarding his position on abortion rights in instances when a woman is a victim of rape.?

"People always want to make it into one of those things ??well, how do you slice this particularly tough ethical question," Akin said in an interview on KTVI-TV, video of which was circulated by the Democratic super PAC American Bridge.?

?First of all, from what I understand from doctors, [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it?s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," Akin said.?

Regarding his opinion on whether to allow for an abortion in such instances, Akin added: ?But let?s assume that maybe that didn?t work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.?

Akin's comments had an almost immediate impact on Missouri's Senate race. McCaskill wrote on Twitter:

In a statement, Akin said that he had misspoken.?

"In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it's clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year," he said.

Akin emerged earlier this month from a tough three-way primary in Missouri, where he rallied social conservatives behind his candidacy. Democrats actually spent during that primary to help Akin win, viewing the six-term congressman as a less formidable challenger in the general election.?

McCaskill, who was first elected in 2006, has become a top target for Republicans this fall, given President Barack Obama's unpopularity in the state and successive statewide victories for the GOP.?

Republicans need a net gain of four seats this fall in order to take over the Senate in the next Congress, and Democrats must defend 23 seats this fall. But unexpected Republican retirements and races that have become more competitive than expected have boosted Democratic hopes of maintaining their majority.?

Hurricane Gordon heads toward eastern Azores

MIAMI (AP) ? Hurricane Gordon sped across the Atlantic early Sunday toward the eastern Azores islands, where a hurricane warning is in effect, U.S. forecasters in Miami said.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Gordon was centered about 395 miles (635 kms) west-southwest of the Azores at 2 a.m. EDT (0600 GMT) Sunday. It added that Gordon was a Category 2 hurricane with top sustained winds of 110 mph (175 kph) and higher gusts.

The hurricane, which formed on Saturday, was moving toward the east at 22 mph (35 kph).

The hurricane was on a forecast track expected to take it near the eastern Azores early Monday. Forecasters said that while the Gordon was expected to weaken somewhat during the day Sunday, it still was expected to be a hurricane when it passes near the eastern Azores.

Portugal's government, meanwhile, has discontinued a hurricane warning for the central Azores.

Forecasters said Gordon, on an eastward track in the pre-dawn hours, was expected to turn toward the east-northeast later Sunday. Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 35 miles (55 kms) from the center and tropical storm force winds reached outward up to 125 miles (205 kphs).

Gordon's dangerous surf and ocean swells could reach the central and eastern Azores on Sunday afternoon and heavy rains were expected, the Miami forecasting center said.

Gordon became a hurricane on Saturday even as onetime Tropical Storm Helene swiftly weakened into a tropical depression as it lumbered ashore on Mexico's Gulf Coast and degenerated into a rain storm without reports of significant damage.

Authorities in Mexico had worried Helene's rains could pose a threat to areas where thousands of people are recovering from flooding spawned last week by Hurricane Ernesto. But Mexico's Veracruz state civil defense office said none of the region's numerous rivers had overflowed Saturday.

Authorities pledged in a news conference to bring to justice those responsible for shooting two Louisiana sheriff?s deputies to death and wounding two others in two separate but related incidents Thursday morning.

St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre said that five suspects are in custody and that the Louisiana State Police have taken over the investigation.

?Our goal is not expediency in trying to rush to conclusions. We?re looking for facts and we?re going to build on those facts,? state police Col. Mike Edmonson said at the Thursday afternoon news conference.

Deputy Brandon Nielsen of the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office had been with the department for two years and was assigned to the traffic division.

The first shooting occurred around 5 a.m. in the parking lot of a Valero refinery in St. John the Baptist Parish, 35 miles west of New Orleans near the Mississippi River.

A deputy was working an off-duty traffic detail at the refinery when someone opened fire on his police vehicle, injuring him.

Moments later, police received a call from someone describing a speeding vehicle fleeing the scene of the shooting. Deputies tracked the vehicle to the Riverview Trailer Court, a trailer park, and began questioning residents.

Police handcuffed one suspect outside a trailer and knocked on its door. A man with a dog answered, and police noticed another man inside fully clothed under a blanket.

After the two men came outside with deputies for questioning, a third man jumped out of a trailer and began firing with an assault weapon.

Deputy Jeremy Triche was assigned to the canine division and was a 4-year veteran of the sheriff's department.

?Another person exited that trailer with an assault weapon and ambushed my two officers,? Tregre said.

Authorities identified the deputies killed as Brandon Nielsen, 34 and Jeremy Triche, 27. The wounded officers are Michael Scott Boyington, 33, and Jason Triche, 30. Officials have not said whether it was Boyington or Jason Triche who was injured in the first shooting.

Tregre said the two Triches are related in some way but was not sure how.

Earlier, officers from nearby parishes assisted in the search for the suspects.

Authorities are still trying to piece together what happened and what led to the shootings.

?Law enforcement is a profession where one day you may take a life, save a life or give your own, and today was one of those days,? Tregre told reporters.

Tregre, who took over the sheriff's office just 45 days ago, the called it ?one of the hardest days of my life so far.?

Nielsen and Jeremy Triche are the first St. John the Baptist Parish deputies to die in the line of duty since 2006, according the sheriff's website.

La Liga, Serie A vanish for many US viewers

NEW YORK (AP) - Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's league matches will disappear from the television sets of many American soccer fans, starting this weekend.

That's because the U.S. television rights to Spain's La Liga have switched from GolTV to the new beIN Sport USA network, launched this week by the Al-Jazeera Sport Media Network and available in only about 8 million homes to viewers of DirecTV and DISH Network.

And it's not just Spain's soccer that is affected.

Italy's Serie A, France's Ligue 1, England's second-tier League Championship and England's League Cup also have moved to high-spending beIN Sport, which is taking over all of them from News Corp.'s Fox Soccer.

"The ratings are going to be so low that they will be almost unmeasurable," said Marc Ganis of the Chicago-based Sports Corp. Ltd., consulting firm. "Considering the push that European soccer is making in the United States, taking additional money and losing exposure becomes fools' gold. They need to have a long-term strategy, not short-term."

The new network will not be rated by Nielsen at the start, but hopes to be at some point, according to managing director Yousef Al Obaidly. It also will be available online to authenticated subscribers of DirecTV and DISH.

"There will be more announcements coming soon," he said Thursday. "We are in a discussion with all the cable operators. Hopefully, we can reach an agreement so we can keep everyone happy."

Now that the European seasons are starting, at least some clubs are worried their leagues made a mistake by taking dollars over distribution. Complicating the matter, a dispute broke out in Spain, with some clubs saying their television rights were sold by a company that doesn't own them.

"I know Madrid and Barcelona are already concerned by what has happened domestically," AC Milan director Umberto Gandini said in a telephone interview. "We were trying to maximize revenues ahead of visibility. Frankly speaking, we were not aware of such difficulties reaching viewers in the United States and the fact that we are going to be penalized highly by the difference in viewership."

The big Spanish and Italian clubs will have their Champions League and Europa League midweek games available in the U.S. on Fox. In addition, RAI USA distributes Serie A matches with Italian commentary and Ligue 1 games will be available with Spanish commentary on Univision Deportes.

All of this could make the U.S. market a soccer Tower of Babel.

"It's a complicated situation," Real Madrid's Jose Mourinho said. "I'm glad I'm just a coach and no more than that, and I think about football and the game and prepare my team."

The English Premier League, which has the biggest American following, sells its international rights directly. Serie A, which didn't centralize rights as a league until just a few years ago, sells them through the agency MP & Silva. La Liga sells them through Mediapro - but until an agreement this week to share domestic rights for three seasons, rival Prisa claimed it represented nine of the 20 clubs.

Imagina USA, a Miami-based company that is part of the Mediapro Group, is beIN Sports' production partner. The English network launched Aug. 3 in an online preview at www.beinsport.tv and beIN Sport announced Wednesday - the official launch date - it will be carried on DirecTV's sports tier in high and standard definition and beIN Sport en Espanol will be distributed on DirecTV Mas in standard definition. A day later, it said DISH Network will televise beIN Sport on its America's Top 250 and DISHLatino packages.

Looming ahead is bidding for the U.S. rights to the Premier League. Networks anticipate a request for proposal next month for the package starting in 2013-14 and running for three seasons. Fox currently holds the rights and sublicenses some to ESPN and ESPN Deportes.

"We might get into it. We might not," Al Obaidly said. "We have to look into scheduling and financials."

The EPL averaged 185,000 viewers for 118 live telecasts on Fox Soccer last year, 321,000 for 48 broadcasts on ESPN2/ESPN and 58,000 for 54 games on ESPN Deportes, according to data from Nielsen Media Research and the networks. Serie A averaged 54,000 viewers for 96 live telecasts on Fox and Ligue 1 53,000 for four broadcasts on Fox.

GolTV averaged just 29,000 viewers for 75 La Liga telecasts among its Hispanic audience, the only portion Nielsen measures. ESPN Deportes averaged 115,000 people in its Hispanic audience for La Liga, but viewers swelled to an average of 770,000 for the two league "clasicos" between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

"It's going probably from a better distributed network to lesser distributed network," said Lino Garcia, general manager of ESPN Deportes. "Therein lies the real difference to the viewer. Some of this product is going to be unavailable to many fans for which it was available to before."

Without La Liga, GolTV's only European league is the German Bundesliga, which had a rating in the network's Hispanic audience that was too low to measure. There has been speculation that beIN Sport USA would like to take over GolTV, if the price is right.

Play-by-play man Phil Schoen and highly excitable color commentator Ray Hudson have moved from GolTV to beIN Sport.

"GolTV has greatly enhanced its portfolio of soccer from the Americas," Rodrigo Lombello, GolTV's chief operating officer, said in a statement. "Reaching new agreements to air matches from the Argentinian, Brazilian and Mexican club leagues, Gillette Brazil World Tour, CONCACAF tournaments and even the U.S. Open Cup, the network has placed an emphasis on this region in the past year as the United States Hispanic population continues to grow."

Qatar, where Al-Jazeera is based, is making a giant push in soccer. Qatar beat out the U.S. two years ago in bidding to host the 2022 World Cup, and the Qatar Investment Authority took control of Paris Saint-Germain and has spent about $200 million in transfer fees for players to strengthen its roster.

In France, Al-Jazeera bought rights to Ligue 1's Friday and Sunday night package from 2012-16; to most Champions League games from 2012-15; and to the 2012 and 2016 European Championship tournaments. In Spain, Barcelona agreed last year to a five-year, 170 million euro (then $225 million) sponsorship deal to carry the Qatar Foundation logo on its famous blue and red jerseys.

If the Premier League wants both beIN Sport's money and greater distribution, it could split its American rights into different packages for different time slots, as it does in Britain and as several U.S. leagues do at home. Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore declined to comment ahead of the bidding.

"They are a little bit more sophisticated than us because they have been on the market as a collective-selling entity far longer than us," Milan's Gandini said. "We are still very far behind the Premier League."
