Renewable Energy Company Using New Business Skills

Story Created: Sep 6, 2012 at 7:52 AM AKDT

Story Updated: Sep 6, 2012 at 7:52 AM AKDT

ANCHORAGE - Starting up a business is tough for anyone, and it?s even harder when you don?t have a business background.

?Can I afford to go into business for myself? Can we maintain enough business, especially in a place like Alaska,? Jesse Moe recalled wondering, remembering the questions that ran through his mind a year ago when devising a business plan for Lime Solar.

Moe, 26, and his business partner Chester Dyson, 26, have the technical background in engineering and renewable energy, but neither were too confident when it came to the ins and outs of starting a business.

So the two entrepreneurs sought the help of Grant Larsen from the Alaska Small Business Development Center.

"It?s the bookkeeping, it's the taxes, it's understanding what you're looking at when you're looking at an income statement or balance sheet," said Larsen during an entrepreneur?s workshop Wednesday night in Anchorage.

Larsen says Moe and Dyson of Lime Solar came to him for advice on getting their business going, applying for grants and loans, and making improvements to their business plan.

"We worked through three years of financial projections, which is pretty common of you are approaching a lender, and certainly a great idea anyway if you are just running a business,? said Larsen.

Lime Solar, which sells solar and wind power products and services, opened its storefront in Mountain View in April, and Moe says he hopes by the end of the year the company will be turning a profit.

South African police shot fleeing miners, witness says

MARIKANA, South Africa (Reuters) - A survivor of last month's police killing of 34 strikers at a South African mine says officers shot fleeing and surrendering men beyond the eyes of the media, challenging police assertions that they fired only in self-defense.

The testimony of Malusi King Danga, a 27-year-old general worker at Lonmin's Marikana mine, sheds light on shootings on a rocky outcrop near the platinum mine on August 16.

Reuters Television footage of one incident showed nearly a dozen striking miners being cut down in a barrage of automatic weapon fire as they emerged from behind a police vehicle.

The images, relayed around the world, conjured up memories of South Africa's racist past. However, most of the deaths at Marikana, 100 km (60 miles) northwest of Johannesburg, occurred away from the cameras.

Danga was able to tell his story only after being released from three weeks in jail on Thursday. His testimony to Reuters suggests that at least three victims were shot either hiding or fleeing from police, or surrendering to them.

Police spokesman Dennis Adriao said he could not comment, pending the outcome of a government inquiry. However, Danga's allegations are likely to deepen public anger with the security forces and the ruling African National Congress.

Danga, who left his home five years ago in the impoverished Eastern Cape in search of work, said the shooting began after strikers who had gathered on a rocky hill that served as rally point fled police who were trying to hem them in.

"It was my first day on the hill. I was expecting the employer to address us. I was there for about five minutes and police started putting up the razor wire," he said, speaking before and after a traditional cleansing ceremony close to the scene of the "Marikana massacre".

"People starting running and police fired a shot. I was running away to the informal settlement in the opposite direction and police chased me and said 'Go back to where you came from.' I ran back towards a second hill, a small hill."

"I was so desperate. I didn't know where to go. Police circled the boulders. I ran up and down trying to escape, to take another route. We were trapped. I crouched and hid myself under one of the rocks," he said.

Danga said he belonged to the breakaway militant union AMCU (Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union), which is widely blamed for stirring up violent unrest in South Africa's platinum sector in a turf war for members with the dominant National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).

He gave his testimony in English, which many South African miners - whose languages are mainly Xhosa and Zulu - do not speak well.

"I'M FINISHED"

While in prison, Danga and 269 other miners were charged under an apartheid era law deeming them to have had "common purpose" in the murder of their 34 co-workers. The charges outraged the general public and were dropped three days later.

According to the police version of events laid out in a media presentation on August 17, officers used non-lethal force to flush out Danga and other men from the rocks and thorny shrubs, and resorted to live ammunition only when they were threatened.

"The police encircled the area and attempted to force the protesters out by means of water cannons, rubber bullets and stun grenades. The militant group stormed towards the police firing shots and wielding dangerous weapons. Police retreated systematically and were forced to utilize maximum force to defend themselves," the police said.

Danga makes no mention of water cannon, tear gas or rubber bullets. He said he was unarmed, but television footage showed hundreds of strikers carrying spears, machetes and clubs. At least one man fired a revolver, a Reuters photographer said.

Danga recalled: "Then I heard the police. I heard a gunshot. An old man was hiding near me. His foot was exposed. I heard another gunshot and I heard him say 'I am finished'. I asked him 'Why do you say you are finished, Madala (grandfather)? Then I saw his boots were full of blood. The old man was shot."

Danga said he did not know what happened to the man.

He then described another striker running towards his hiding place. "I heard a gunshot. It seemed like he was running away. I heard a gunshot and I saw him fall face down. A third man raised his arms to surrender and police shot his hand and then his foot and he lost his balance."

It is not known whether either of these two men survived.

Crouched in a crevice between some rocks, Danga was hidden from policemen combing the scene but thinks officers in a helicopter hovering above may have spotted him. Police on the ground then singled him out by his clothes.

"After the third guy was shot, I waited and I heard the policeman say 'All of those on the ground, come out'. He said: 'You with the shorts and striped t-shirt - get out.'"

"As I was coming up they kicked me in my teeth and one of the gold fillings fell out," he said, lifting his lips to reveal a gap between his front teeth.

POLICE BEATING

When the first group of miners was released this week, disturbing claims of beatings and assault emerged. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate said it had received nearly 200 complaints from the arrested miners.

Danga said that four days into his detention in a police station in Bethanie, a town 50 km (30 miles) away, police assaulted the group while searching for a nail they thought was hidden in the cell.

"On Tuesday, they beat us and they beat us. They said they were looking for a nail in the cell. We did not have one," he said, anger and frustration creeping into his voice.

"While they were searching they found a cell phone on one of the guys. They klapped (slapped) him. They kicked him. They stepped on him. We were all there. They did this in front of us. What about his dignity? While they were hitting him, other police were laughing at him.

"Another guy washed his blood-stained clothes. He wrapped himself in a blanket. The police pulled the blanket off him. He was naked and they laughed at him."

When his mother died in 2007, Danga became the family's main breadwinner and headed to the platinum mines near Johannesburg to support his three younger brothers.

After deductions such as tax, a medical levy and pension contributions, Danga said he took home about 3,000 rand ($360) a month for toiling away as a general worker in stifling conditions hundreds of meters underground.

"I have to pay for my brother who is at university and for another two young boys. I could not afford to keep them in the Eastern Cape so I brought them to Marikana. After everything is paid, I have about 200 rand left," he said.

Danga said he was lucky to be alive but was still haunted by the horrors he had witnessed. "I saw three people being shot and I am disturbed. Every time I close my eyes, I see it again," he said. "God had his hand over me that day. I was spared."

Well-known protein reveals new tricks

ScienceDaily (Sep. 6, 2012) ? A protein called "clathrin," which is found in every human cell and plays a critical role in transporting materials within them, also plays a key role in cell division, according to new research at the University of California, San Francisco.

The discovery, featured on the cover of the Journal of Cell Biology in August, sheds light on the process of cell division and provides a new angle for understanding cancer. Without clathrin, cells divide erratically and unevenly -- a phenomenon that is one of the hallmarks of the disease.

"Clathrin is doing more than we thought it was doing," said Frances Brodsky, DPhil, who led the research. Brodsky is a professor in the UCSF Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences, a joint department of the Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine, and she holds joint appointments in Microbiology and Immunology, as well as Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

A Protein Essential for Transportation in More Than One Route

Akin to a three-pronged building block in a child's construction set, clathrin can provide links to create larger complexes. When lots of these proteins are assembled together, they can form tough little cages into which cells packs many of their essential biological molecules -- hormones, neurotransmitters, membrane proteins and other payloads that need to be transported throughout the cell.

Once thought to be solely involved in transport inside cells, scientists have uncovered more and more of the protein's hidden functions in the last half-dozen years, including some roles it plays in cell division.

For instance, they learned several years ago about its role in the function of "spindles." Normally when a cell divides, it forms a spindle by laying down tracks of structural proteins, and uses them as scaffolding to separate the cell's DNA (in the form of chromosomes) into two equal collections -- one identical set of DNA for each of the new daughter cells. Scientists found that clathrin is involved in stabilizing these spindles.

Now, however, Brodsky and her colleagues have shown that clathrin does even more. They deleted clathrin from cells using a technique called RNA interference, which involves infusing in small genetic fragments that block the cell from making the clathrin. Doing so, Brodsky and her colleagues showed that clathrin stabilizes the structures in dividing cells known as centrosomes.

Tagged with fluorescent chemicals and viewed under a microscope, the centrosomes within a cell that is about to divide look like two glowing eyes peering through the dark. But without clathrin, the team determined, the eyes increase in number.

Brodsky and her colleagues traced this effect to a protein complex formed by one particular component of clathrin called CHC17, which directly stabilizes the centrosome and helps it mature. Deleting CHC17 or chemically inactivating it, led to cells with a strange appearance. These cells contained multiple, fragmented centrosomes instead of the normal two and built abnormal spindles.

This discovery may reveal pathways towards abnormalities of chromosome segregation associated with cancer, said Brodsky.

The article, "Clathrin promotes centrosome integrity in early mitosis through stabilization of centrosomal ch-TOG" by Amy B. Foraker, St?phane M. Camus, Timothy M. Evans, Sophia R. Majeed, Chih-Ying Chen, Sabrina B. Taner, Ivan R. Corr?a Jr., Stephen J. Doxsey and Frances M. Brodsky appears in the August 20, 2012 issue of the Journal of Cell Biology.

In addition to the group at UCSF, authors on this study are affiliated with New England Biolabs, Inc., in Ipswich, MA, and the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, MA.

Facebook says CEO won't sell stock for 1 year

(AP) ? Facebook's stock got some reprieve in after-hours trading Tuesday after the company said its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, won't sell stock in the company for at least the next 12 months.

Investors have been concerned with the expiration of lockup periods that allow insiders to sell stock in Facebook. If a lot of shares flood the market the stock price may fall. Adding to those worries, Peter Thiel, a board member and Facebook's earliest big investor, has shed most of his holdings in the Menlo Park, Calif.-based company.

In the Tuesday regulatory filing, Facebook allayed some of those fears. In addition to its disclosure about Zuckerberg's plans, it said that two of its board members, Marc Andreessen and Donald Graham, plan to sell shares to cover taxes, but have no "present intention" to sell any additional stock.

Earlier in the day the social media company's stock fell to its lowest point since its initial public offering after an analyst for the bank that orchestrated its IPO cut his target price on the stock to $32 from $38 saying that its mobile advertising revenue is just starting to grow. The latter was Facebook's IPO price ? the one it hasn't hit since its first day of trading on May 18.

Morgan Stanley analyst Scott Devitt still has an "Overweight" rating on Facebook stock. Doug Anmuth, an analyst at JPMorgan, which was another large underwriter of the offering, also cut his target price on Tuesday, to $30 from $45. He kept an "Overweight" rating as well.

Facebook's stock fell to $17.55 in Tuesday trading, its lowest point ever, and closed down 33 cents at $17.73. That's less than half of the stock's initial public offering price of $38. It climbed 31 cents, or 1.8 percent, to $18.04 in after-hours trading following the disclosure that Zuckerberg will hold off on selling.

Facebook also said that it plans to report its third-quarter earnings on Oct. 23.

Ex-Formula One driver Zanardi takes on new race

(AP) ? Alex Zanardi just can't stop racing.

The former Formula One driver is vying for a Paralympic medal Wednesday in paracycling ? a hand cycle powered by the arms ? at the Brands Hatch race track, where he once raced cars. It's really incredible, when you realize the 45-year-old almost died in a horrific accident in a 2001 CART race in Germany.

"For a brief moment I found myself thinking of all the things I've done," Zanardi said on his Twitter feed before leaving for the London Paralympics. "I'm a lucky boy!"

His journey to the Paralympics began at the American Memorial 500 on Sept. 15, 2001, at the Eurospeedway Lausitz in Germany ? the only American-based series to go forward on the weekend after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Zanardi, a former two-time CART champion, had had a difficult season and started 22nd in a field of 27, but the car was responding well. He was enjoying the drive, passing one car after another, until with 13 laps to go he was in the lead.

Zanardi went into his final pit stop and the crew chief waved him off urging him to "Go, go, go!"

But as he built up speed to get back into the race, the car spun out of control and he veered onto the track. Canadian driver Alex Tagliani, traveling at close to 200 mph (320 kph), could not avoid him. The reinforced carbon fiber cone of Tagliani's car sliced through the area beside Zanardi's left front wheel and cockpit, the weakest part of the vehicle.

On the track, Dr. Terry Trammel slipped and fell as he raced to the wreckage. He thought he had fallen in oil, but it was Zanardi's blood.

The crash had severed Zanardi's right leg at the knee and his left at the thigh some five inches above the knee. The driver's lower legs had disintegrated like those of land mine victims, said Dr. Steve Olvey, director of medical affairs for CART at the time. He had lost 70 percent of his blood, his pelvis was fractured in five places and he had a lacerated liver.

But Zanardi was alive.

At the hospital, Zanardi's wife, Daniela, told him he had lost his legs. But that was only part of the problem. He had been in a coma for three days, his heart had stopped at least once, and he was alive only because of the medical response to his injuries.

Much work for his recovery lay ahead.

NASCAR driver Max Papis, who has known Zanardi since they were kids in Italy, recalled visiting his friend in the hospital, where Zanardi glanced at Papis' new shoes.

"He said to 'Look at the positive side of this. For a long time I will not have to spend money buying those,'" Papis said.

Pushing the limits, he began to walk again only months after the accident. Always tinkering, Zanardi used technology and his experience from working with elite race cars to forge a new life ? to adapt to his new circumstances, to learn how to use prosthetic legs.

"You don't know how many times I fell just taking ridiculous small steps," he told the BBC. "It was bloody hard."

Two years after the accident, he returned to Lausitz to finish the 13 laps, and later began racing specially modified touring cars. But he had many other races to run. Pity didn't occur to him.

"He's a lion," said his former teammate, Jimmy Vasser. "He just never gave up."

Zanardi thought of it as part of his destiny, just something that happened to him, said Chip Ganassi, who owns the team that Zanardi once raced for.

"That was like a speed bump for him," Ganassi said.

Zanardi took up paracycling to stay in shape. A hand cycle is powered by the arms and features two coasting rear wheels and one steerable front wheel. In 2007, he was invited to attend the pasta party at the New York City marathon that was thrown by his sponsor, Barilla. He decided that if he was going, he should take part.

At the race, he passed a well-known rider and finished fourth. By 2011, he was first.

Now he's challenging American Oscar "Oz" Sanchez, who won a gold medal in the time trial at the Paralympics in Beijing and a bronze medal in the road race.

Sanchez is a formidable competitor who overcame overwhelming odds as well. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Sanchez turned a life of drugs and street gangs around by joining the U.S. Marines. He was about to transfer to the Navy Seals when he suffered a spinal cord injury in a hit-and-run motorcycle accident.

Zanardi knows the course will be tough ? he once drove the track at Brands Hatch, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from London. To make things worse, he had a bad crash with his favorite bike a few weeks ago ? a picture on his Twitter feed showed a crumpled vehicle, its front wheel askew.

But Papis said Zanardi had shrugged off such accidents.

"He would say, 'It can't be that bad, because I can't break my leg anymore,' " Papis said.

In the days before this big race, the normally talkative Zanardi has shunned interviews, concentrating on the task at hand, even as interest in his story has skyrocketed.

On Wednesday, it's all about the bike ? even though it's about a million other things, too.

"In my career I've always received a lot of support, but I would not expect so much as I'm getting these days," he told followers on Twitter. "Thank you all."
