Choices that Make a Difference about your 401k Rollover ...

Frequently, the particular terms IRA rollover and 401(k) rollover are employed interchangeably because people utilize both words to describe the transition of cash from a 401k plan to the IRA whenever they either change companies as well as cease working. The main reasons it?s common to transfer cash from your 401k program when leaving from your employer is for a broader range of investments and perhaps better results and increased control of your retirement cash. The typical 401k may provide Four to 10 investment options whereas your personal IRA which is essentially unlimited in respect to your investment choices. In fact, a lot of people working for a corporation will try to move funds from their 401k to their IRA to enjoy these advantages and in some cases that is achievable.

How you handle the movement of the 401(k)-rollover is important as the improper method can lead to unwanted withholding taxes. When moving funds from your 401k to an IRA, you can either obtain the check from your 401k administrator after which you bring it to your new IRA custodian otherwise you can have the 401k administrator send out the funds directly to the IRA custodian. The first choice is a dreadful decision as the 401kadministrator must hold back 20% from the balance when the check is being delivered to you. In the event the 401(k) rollover is done directly between your 401k plan and your new IRA account, zero withholding is required.

Any time transferring funds from the 401k to an IRA rollover, it is occasionally beneficial to not roll over all property. Specifically, shares of your company that you have within your 401k as you might get beneficial income tax treatment if you take them from the 401k and don?t move them over. Specifically, much of the profit on those shares might be eligible for capital gains taxes. However, if you rollover the shares to your IRA, that benefit will be gone forever.

Often, the words rollover IRA is used to identify the transfer involving funds from a single IRA account to another. Here yet again, you may either receive a check from one IRA and carry it to your other or have the preceding IRA custodian mail the funds directly to your new custodian. The latter is a preferable way to handle an IRA rollover since it eliminates any kind of conditions that could cause pointless income tax for you. As there is zero withholding when you take funds from an IRA bill, you need to finish the IRA rollover inside 60 days or the distribution will become taxed to you.

Note that all funds removed from a IRA or 401k is not entitled to rollover. For instance, once you turn age 70 1/2, you are faced with required withdrawals from either type of account. When taking these required withdrawals, they get included with your tax return and are then subject to income tax. You may not perform a IRA rollover of those distributions as they are definitely not entitled

Filipino villagers helped kill terror leader (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? Abu Sayyaf commander Umbra Jumdail had deviated from the brutal image of his al-Qaida-linked militant group by playing doctor to poor Filipino villagers, whose backing he needed to stay safe from military troops. But those villagers may have been used by the military to finally track him down last week.

A U.S.-backed airstrike killed Jumdail, his son and several militants while they slept in huts or hammocks Thursday near Parang town on southern Jolo island, dealing the latest blow to the Abu Sayyaf and depriving it of a key leader. Jumdail had harbored a top Southeast Asian terror suspect, Malaysian Zulkifli bin Hir, also known as Marwan.

Among the FBI's most-wanted terrorists, Marwan, a U.S.-educated engineer, had been crucial in helping turn mostly desperate peasant recruits into Abu Sayyaf bombers and training them to carry out deadly attacks.

The Philippine military had announced that the long-hunted Marwan and his Singaporean ally Abdullah Ali were killed in the air raid along with Jumdail and other Filipino extremists. Two security officials, however, said Sunday that new intelligence shows that Jumdail was killed but that the two foreign terror suspects were alive and were not in the Abu Sayyaf lair that was bombed.

Not a single body was retrieved by police in the bombed hilly jungle lair near Lanao Dakulah village, fueling different versions of who was killed.

Philippine officials, nevertheless, hailed Jumdail's death as the latest major blow to the Abu Sayyaf, which has carved its name in blood through bombings, kidnappings and beheadings. The extremist group is on Washington's list of terrorist organizations. The militants, currently estimated to number less than 400, have endured years of battle setbacks and the loss of key commanders.

"He had the charisma and was the real link used by foreign militants," military spokesman Col. Arnulfo Marcelo Burgos said of Jumdail. "He was a big loss."

Jumdail had taken a course related to medicine, enabling him to serve as a rebel medic who treated wounded comrades when he joined the Moro National Liberation Front, once the Philippines' largest Muslim separatist group.

He left the Moro group after it signed a 1996 peace pact with the government and eventually emerged as a commander of the violent Abu Sayyaf, which was organized by a Filipino militant after helping wage the anti-Soviet resistance in Afghanistan, according to Jumdail's former comrades.

While surrounded by militants notorious for beheading hostages, Jumdail had ingratiated himself to many villagers by providing treatment for tropical maladies. He performed jungle surgery to wounded combatants, earning the rebel alias "Dr. Abu Pula."

Rep. Lady Ann Sahidulla, who negotiated for the release of three Red Cross aid workers taken hostage by Abu Sayyaf gunmen in 2009, said she saw Jumdail treating ill villagers with herbs in an Abu Sayyaf jungle encampment. "Doc Abu was kind, but then why didn't he say no to their atrocities?" she said.

While Sahidulla talked with Jumdail, a villager rushed to his lair and warned him that troops were approaching with a tank, though no clash erupted, she said.

Out of mistrust, Sahidulla said she hid a small pistol in her bra in case the violent militants with Jumdail would try something nasty. The three aid workers, from Switzerland, Italy and the Philippines, were eventually freed, reportedly after ransom payments.

A captured Abu Sayyaf commander now under the government's witness protection program has described Jumdail as a "local Robin Hood" who used his loot to help out poor Muslim villagers and keep their loyalty.

Surviving militants suspect that villagers secretly working for the military traveled to Jumdail's hideout and pretended to seek medical treatment to be able to bring in and leave some kind of sensor, which was later used by the military to set its bomber planes on his Abu Sayyaf lair, said a Philippine military intelligence official who had been helping monitor the militants.

The impact of the blasts destroyed huts and toppled trees, including a mango tree that pinned Jumdail, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.

Despite his image, Jumdail was no less dangerous.

U.S. and Philippine officials had offered bounties for Jumdail's capture for high-profile ransom kidnappings. His group was planning terror attacks, including new kidnappings of foreigners and bombings, when he was killed along with his son, who was also an Abu Sayyaf fighter, officials said.

10 Home Improvement Projects You Can Finance with FHA 203k

by admin on February 5, 2012

The?FHA 203k can help finance required repairs as well as desired improvements whether you?re buying a house or you?re willing to refinance to pay for the work you want done. This home improvement loan option is great for first time home buyers, step-up buyers, refinancing homeowners and almost any other real estate category.

For about $6 a month added to the mortgage payment, you can add $1,000 in home improvements. So a $20,000 remodeling project would add about $120 to your monthly mortgage payment. The nice thing is that the interest paid is part of your mortgage ? tax break!

So what kind of work can you finance using the?FHA 203k? The list is long. It?s almost easier to ask what you can NOT finance. That?s basically luxury items like a spa or tennis courts, or items that wouldn?t add value to the home like and LED HDTV. With that in mind, here?s a look at 10 ideas for home improvement projects you could finance with the?FHA 203k mortgage option.

  1. Energy efficient windows. Not only would they look nicer than the old rotting wood ones there now, but it will save on your heating and cooling bills!
  2. Exterior paint. Cracked, faded or just plain ugly ? it?s time to repaint the house. Paying for a professional job beats hiring the neighbor kids who will probably make a huge mess anyway (I can say that ? I?ve been one of those neighbor kids!).
  3. Roof repair or replacement. You don?t really want to climb up there and do it yourself. But if the house needs a new roof (or repairs), then it?s a must-have. You don?t want an inadvertent sunroof in your home, do you?
  4. Flooring replacement or upgrades. FHA requires flooring in a home. You probably require that, too. All new carpet, laminate or tile ? your choice.
  5. Kitchen remodeling project. Everything but the kitchen sink?well that?s not exactly true. You can get a new sink, too. Plus appliances. A new kitchen? That makes everyone happy.
  6. Convert/add a bathroom. Who couldn?t use another bathroom? I live with 2 daughters and a wife. I could use a few extra bathrooms.
  7. Build a deck. What better place to spend the summer and fall than on the deck in the evening? Build or repair a deck with the?FHA 203k.
  8. Add a porch. If the mosquitoes could carry you off your deck, maybe a nice porch is just the ticket. Heavy duty screens could make the difference between looking at a nice deck outside from the comfort of your kitchen?and experiencing the nice outdoors.
  9. Lead-based paint abatement. Get rid of lead-based paint and have new, safer paint in its place.
  10. Mold issues/damp basement. Who wants to live in a moldy home? Finance the mold removal and basement water-proofing with an?FHA 203k.

While one or two of these projects may not warrant an?FHA 203k, add up a few of them and you have yourself a pretty pricey list of work. The 203k requires a licensed contractor perform the improvements, so you?d have the benefit of a professional doing all the work.

At the NIH State-of-the-Science Conference a few weeks ago, an independent panel advised that active surveillance is appropriate for patients presenting low-grade, low-volume prostate cancer and recommended the removal of the terminology ?cancer? by physicians when discussing courses of action. While active surveillance for these patients unarguably has many merits, Drs. Bruce Chabner and Matthew Smith of Massachusetts General Hospital expressed their concerns for the suggested change in nomenclature in an editorial in The Oncologist.

The panel recommended removing the term ?cancer? for patients with this early stage/low volume disease to alleviate much of the anxiety that goes along with the term. While prostate cancer typically progresses slowly in these patients and they are unlikely to experience morbidity or mortality as a result of their condition, the pathology is still consistent with the diagnosis of cancer.

Dr. Chabner stated, ?I am concerned about the rush to change the perception of prostate cancer. While it is certain that we unnecessarily treat or over-treat elderly patients with low grade disease, prostate cancer, like other cancers, has the potential to kill. We are not yet sufficiently knowledgeable to know precisely which patients will progress and in which patients the disease will remain stagnant. That uncertainty needs to be communicated to our patients as we discuss screening and treatment. Changing the name will simply confuse the issue.?
