JIM Redmond, who famously helped his injured son Derek across the finish line at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, will carry the Olympic torch this summer.

Redmond raced from the stands at the Montjuic Stadium after his son collapsed to the track with a hamstring injury in the semi-finals of the 400m.
The image of the athlete in tears as he was comforted and supported by his father, as they walked slowly down the home straight, is regularly listed as one of the all-time great Olympic moments.
Redmond and the father of aspiring 2012 diver Chris Mears are the first two torchbearers to be nominated by the British Olympic Association for this summer's relay, which will see 8,000 individuals carry the flame across the United Kingdom.
Paul Mears and his wife Katy maintained a bedside vigil for their 16-year old son after he was seriously hurt while competing for Team GB at the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney.
After a spell in intensive care with a ruptured spleen, Mears successfully returned to his sport and is in contention for Olympic selection.
"I am delighted they have been nominated as torchbearers," said British Olympic Association Colin Moynihan.
"The often unsung role that parents play throughout the lives of Olympic athletes in nurturing the values, dedication and commitment needed to become a successful Olympian is invaluable."?
