Plan Your Home Improvement Projects ? Do In South Beach

Home improvement projects are full of tasks you want to do and many that you have to do. Every home needs its additions and with today?s budgeting and enterprising minds, the business of renovating and improving has become easier simple and cost-saving. Home improvement projects are great ways of expanding your home without really expanding them physically. Transforming your home into your holiday hangout is a great way for better lifestyle.

These projects generally have one or more of the following goals:

1. Beautification and added features

? Change of wall-papering and the color of the house
? Adding new flooring such as carpets, tiling, linoleum, or wood flooring
? Upgrading cabinets, fixtures, in the home

2. For Comfort

? Upgrading heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems
? Waterproofing the house

3.

For Maintenance and repair

? Roof and floor maintenance due to tear and wear
? Repairing plumbing and electrical systems

4. To create additional space

? Extend the ?livable space? by converting basements into bed rooms, home theaters, or home offices
? Extending one?s house with additional rooms at the side of the house or, sometimes, extra levels to the original roof.

5. Saving energy

? Energy-efficient insulation for electricity and water

6. For necessary safety features:

? Home fire and burglar alarm systems inclusive of security doors and windows
? Fire sprinkler systems to protect homes from fire
? Storm cellars as protection from tornadoes and hurricanes
? Backup generators for providing power during power outages

Home improvement can be a dream came true for many people.

However, it is important to balance up the cost of the projects against the return of the investment. Even if you don?t have any intention to sell off your house in future, it is still worth-while to know the real cost of the home improvement projects versus the quality of one?s lifestyle which it can bring significantly.

However, it is always better to have someone experienced and skillful to manage these projects for your home as the experts know how to run these projects effectively in the shortest time and lowest cost, with better suggestions and ideas to offer than you.

2012 outdoor living trends can easily update your patio or deck

More homeowners want their outdoor space to truly be an extension of their house and are taking steps to create an inviting area to relax, play and host guests. If you want to update your deck or patio for warm weather entertaining, you don?t have to spend a lot of time or money. You can easily refresh the items you already have and add new stylish elements by keeping some top trends and design ideas in mind.

Consider these tips from the design experts at Lowe?s to help transform your space into a welcoming outdoor oasis. With just a few easy outdoor home improvement changes, you?ll have the best patio on the block.

Mix functional furniture
The line between indoor and outdoor design is blurring. You can coordinate the style of adjacent indoor and outdoor rooms, since you and your guests will likely spend time in both. No matter if you have a large outdoor deck or a simple small patio, many affordable, stylish outdoor furniture options are available from allen + roth. Set up furniture with flow in mind, grouping pieces together to encourage comfort, conversation and a view of nature.

Add colorful accessories
Incorporating rugs, outdoor pillows, candles and other accessories in vivid colors or fun patterns can really make your outdoor space come alive. Pick three to four colors for your scheme and stick with those colors throughout your design choices. Some of the season?s top hues include rich reds, vivid blues, soothing neutrals and garden-inspired greens. Metal accents are popular as well, so look for decor with gold or silver detailing for a design that?s modern with a tropical flare.

Incorporate a fire pit
An outdoor bonfire likely evokes pleasant memories of the past, so incorporate a fire pit into your patio space so your whole family can enjoy time together roasting marshmallows, telling stories and gazing at the stars. Today?s modern fire pits are both stylish and useful, adding a cozy ambiance while warding off the chill on cooler nights. Plus when the seasons do change and fall brings with it lower temperatures, you can still enjoy the beautiful outdoor space you?ve created because you?ll be comfortably warm. Remember to look for options that have a removable screen, so you can open when needed for cooking and then close to keep the fire safely contained.

Create privacy
Just because you?re outdoors doesn?t mean that you don?t want a bit of privacy from neighbors or passersby. The good news is it?s easy to create boundaries to your space by using a pergola or outdoor curtains. These options tie in nicely with other outdoor design trends and can give just the right amount of privacy, creating your own outdoor ?room? in which to enjoy the long, sunny days.

Light the night
Lighting can really make your outdoor space come alive once the sun goes down. Add depth and intrigue by ?lightscaping? from different sources. Consider putting up string lights that provide a magical setting that is sure to dazzle guests long after darkness falls. Add an intimate wall lantern next to the patio door or eco-friendly LED garden and path lights to add a soft illumination to outdoor space.

Grow an herb garden
There?s nothing that adds the flavors of summer to food like fresh herbs. One of today?s top trends is to have a container garden so you always have your favorite herbs on hand to freshly pick. Popular herbs that are easy to grow include basil, chives, cilantro, dill, fennel and mint. When planting, use containers that complement your outdoor design. Vintage styles that feature aged patinas are very popular this year.

VoIP Phones as a Communications Medium between Employees ...

If you will be using the Voice Over IP technology, you will need a VoIP phone which allows telephone calls to be made over the Internet instead of the traditional telephone system.? Suitable phones can be simple software-based phones or a cordless phone. USB and softphone PC applications are considered transitional by larger telephone manufacturers such as Cisco, Siemens and Alcatel.

Generally speaking, the features of VoIP phones follow those of Skype, Google Voice and other PC-based phone services. Netbooks and smartphones will become the dominant interfaces as well as iPhone, Android and the BlackBerry which are capable of VoIP performance

The overall hardware may look like a telephone or mobile phone. A VoIP phone has the following hardware components.

  • Speaker/ear phone and microphone
  • Key pad/touch pad to enter phone number and text (not used for ATA?s)
  • Display hardware to feedback user input and show caller-id/messages (not used for ATAs).
  • General purpose processor (GPP) to process application messages.
  • A voice engine or a digital signal processor to process RTP messages.
  • ADC and DAC converters which will convert voice to digital data and vice versa.
  • Ethernet or wireless network to send and receive messages on data network.
  • An Ethernet port for a PC which allows your computer and phone to share one data connection, routed through the phone and to the computer.
  • Power source ? a battery or DC source.

For wireless VoIP phones

  • battery
  • Wireless network interface controller

Painkiller-dealing 'Candy Man' doctor sentenced

By msnbc.com staff and news services

AP

Photo provided by the Jennings Police Department Mug shows Anna Brown.

RICHMOND HEIGHTS, Mo. ? Officials at a St. Louis hospital on Thursday defended their actions in the case of a homeless woman who sought treatment for a sprained ankle and died in police custody after being arrested for refusing to leave the emergency room.

An autopsy determined that Anna Brown's death in a jail cell in September was caused by blood clots that formed in her legs and migrated to her lungs, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. The newspaper also obtained surveillance footage of the woman's final moments. In the video, officers are seen carrying Brown into a jail cell. The cell door closes and Brown is heard moaning and crying.

Brown's family says authorities treated the 29-year-old mother of two unfairly and have hired a St. Louis-based lawyer, Keith Link. Link did not respond to telephone messages from msnbc.com on Thursday.

St. Mary's Health Center says its staff followed medical guidelines and performed appropriate tests, acknowledging the ?outrage being expressed in this tragic event.?

?Unfortunately, even with appropriate testing using sophisticated technology, blood clots can still be undetected in a small number of cases,? according to a statement released by St. Mary's Health Center on Thursday. ?The sad reality is that emergency departments across the country are often a place of last resort for many people in our society who suffer from complex social problems that become medical issues when they are not addressed. It is unfortunate that it takes a tragic event like this to call attention to a crisis in our midst.?

Police have said officers had no way of knowing Brown's dire condition.

Brown went to three hospitals complaining of leg pain in the days leading up to her death, including her visit to St. Mary's that led to her arrest for trespassing. She was wheeled out in handcuffs after a doctor said she was healthy enough to be locked up.

Brown had been struggling after a series of devastating setbacks, family say.

'Starting to? make progress'
A New Year's Eve tornado in 2010 destroyed Brown's home in north St. Louis home, the Post-Dispatch reported. She and her two children moved to Berkeley, a St. Louis suburb, and she lost her job at a sandwich shop soon afterward, the Post-Dispatch said.

According to the Post-Dispatch, her utilities were shut off because she stopped paying her bills, and after a child welfare agent who visited the home in April found a feces-filled toilet, burn marks on the floor where she had lit fires to keep warm and other distressing signs, Brown was arrested for parental neglect. Police reported at the time that she seemed confused, the newspaper reported.

Her mother, Dorothy Davis, received custody of Brown's children on the condition that Brown couldn't also live with them, and Brown's home was condemned, the newspaper reported. She lived in four homeless shelters from May until September, according to the Post-Dispatch.

Brown joined the St. Louis Empowerment Center, a drop-in center for the mentally ill, the newspaper reported.

"She was just starting to make progress," Kevin Dean, a peer specialist at the center, told the Post-Dispatch.

Dean and another staff member at the drop-in center recalled hearing Anna Brown say she hurt her ankle.

Davis, who said Brown called every day to check on her children, said she wants answers about her?daughter's death.

"If the police killed my daughter, I want to know. If the hospital is at fault, I want to know," Davis told the Post-Dispatch. "I want to be able to tell her children why their mother isn't here."

8?8 Sharpens Call Centers' Cloud Presence with Advanced Chat ...

Communications experts at 8?8 (News ? Alert) Inc., who recently acquired Contactual (News ? Alert), a provider of cloud-based call center solutions, just announced several enhancements to its Virtual Office PBX phone service and a Virtual Office Pro unified communications solution.

8?8 Inc. is a source for communication technologies for businesses in the cloud. Its merger with Contactual fosters virtual call centers resulting from several adaptations in IaaS and SaaS (News ? Alert). Companies can now trim the fat in daily IT processes with video web conferencing, private web servers and other tasks requiring managed Web spaces. The ?one-stop shop? has informed cloud-computing practices for small- and medium-sized businesses for 10 years.

8?8 clients see the full benefits of cloud-based data with their advancements, allowing them to access their core communications services from anywhere, using any device connected to the Web. Their latest includes a 4-line appearance service, allowing IP phones to manage up to four calls concurrently in a virtual office; streamlined dialing, allowing automated attendants to submit information to unattended calls; Web and video conferencing in interactive, media-friendly online rooms and a number of easy chat and scheduling tools.

?Many of these upgrades were driven by the valuable input we receive from our customers who are rapidly becoming proficient, web-based communications users,? said Debbie Jo Severin (News ? Alert), 8?8?s chief marketing officer. ?It?s great to see the adoption of these technologies grow and the subsequent benefits they are delivering to our business customers.?

Virtual call centers know no bounds in distance between them and their clients. In/outbound calls are therefore an easy, inexpensive task, and customers become more receptive to their services.

8?8?s Virtual Office Pro provides quality, unlimited calling and conferencing phone services, fundamental to the efficiency of a call center. Putting all inter-company interaction online reduces communication barriers, keeping all associated call centers consistent with a business?s values.

Good food, Shipping Cases and Trade Show Marketing | Restaurant ...

Food is the path to many people?s hearts. Here, in the restaurant industry, it?s also the path to securing business.?At foodservice and restaurant trade shows, attendees can sample and sip their way through the booths, tasting pastries, wines, and fresh grilled meats. Ideally, professionals in the restaurant industry can select new vendors and suppliers from the trade show floor, and also learn about new food preparation technology and equipment.

Current customers and new prospects of the foodservice industry can learn about the most recent ideas that have been cooked up by exhibiting restaurateurs. As they visit trade show booths, they might see a hibachi grill slowly roasting seasoned kabobs and nibble on a sample. They may also see munchie-free exhibitors who are displaying the new technology of microwaves for hotel kitchen use.

Whether it?s the food itself or the new technology for preparing it, a trade show is filled with the necessary equipment to make food? and to make food good. Often, a restaurant trade show is a national event, attracting foodservice professionals from coast to coast.?For the exhibitors, this requires a lot of packing and traveling.

Chefs, bakers, caterers, hotel managers, nightclub operators, and restaurateurs all have a lot of equipment to bring to a trade show if they want to exhibit some of their most flavoured offerings or new takes on preparation. The equipment must be shipped from their home bases to the trade show location, and typically, the travel involves a plane, or at least a heavy-duty van or truck. Professional food service equipment is expensive, and packing it with care is a priority.

Shipping cases, customized for the size, shape, and weight of the equipment, are ideal for transporting and protecting expensive or breakable equipment during transit to trade shows. A professional chef is never going to show up with his frozen shrimp packed in a $15 Walmart cooler any more than a china and glassware service is going to cart their breakables in duffel bags.?Today?s shipping cases are lightweight, made from high-density polyethylene. Shipping cases designed for even heavier loads are made from laminate-covered plywood. All can be customized with wheels and handles, to roll large loads, and with interior foam, to cushion fragile equipment. Shipping cases can have separate, small compartments within them to individually house component parts, often in the form of interior drawers.?With steel-reinforced corners and frames, shipping cases can safely be piled in the belly of an airplane or the back of a truck, and the contents will arrive on the trade show floor without damage. Cases can be round, square, or rectangular, and can be built to the customers? specifications for even the oddest-sized object. Many are ATA-certified, which means the Air Transport Association has approved them to travel in a plane.

If specialized refrigerators and freezer cases are the industry standard for transporting food, shipping cases are the standard for transporting equipment, both large and small. Even the table cloth at a vendor?s booth and the laminated posters on display behind can be transported in graphic cases. These are telescoping, cylindrical shipping cases that hold rolled banners and other visual aids which keep them from ripping or wrinkling.

So eat hearty at your next trade show, whether you?re an attendee or a vendor! May your seasonings be flavorful, may your wines be bountiful, and may your equipment arrive in perfect, working order. Bon apetit!

If you are looking into enhancing your trade show exhibits, please consider shipping cases.

Business Cards Online Companies - Risk Management

Posted by admin on March 29th, 2012 |

You can start by browsing the internet for different business cards online companies. If you know the potential of search engines to provide you with what you need, you won?t have a hard time looking for a printing company online. Of course, you still need to filter these companies and make sure that they won?t make a run for your money. Just like any other company or business you are going to deal with, you have to know their background history first; how long they are in the printing business. Search ad contact for those persons they have already catered. You can see these in their online portfolio, reviews and testimonials. When you are quite confident that they can be trusted, then you can proceed with getting in touch with them. Communicating won?t be hard either since everything can be done virtually.

Now you need to think about the design of your business card. There are online sites that already provide the software for you to create your own card and make it more personalised. Don?t be afraid to be creative and play around with the design. Make sure it will include the logo and name of your company. It must also have the correct and clear detail about your information; your name, company address, email address, mobile and phone numbers so they will have a lot of ways to reach you. If you think you are not good with this, you can hire the services of a local graphic designer to make the design for you. But if you want to save, do it yourself. Plus, it will make your card more special because of the personal touch. And the good thing about it is that you can expect that the business card will turn out the way you want it to.

Finally, know about the prices of their packages and find out if you can save in bulk. But don?t overestimate the number of business card printing copies that you need to order. Make sure it?s just enough. You can always order again when you run out of cards. And another advantage you can get is you can expect to receive your business cards 2-3 business days from the day you ordered it. It?s that fast.

Algorithmic Essay-Grading: Teacher?s Savior Or Bane Of Learning?

roboA contest is underway at data-crunching competition site Kaggle that challenges people to create "an automated scoring algorithm for student-written essays." This is just the latest chapter in a generations-long conflict over the nature of teaching, and to that end it's also just one of many inevitable steps along the line. Automated grading is already prevalent in simpler tasks like multiple-choice and math testing, but computers have yet to seriously put a dent in the most time-consuming of grading tasks: essays. Millions of students write dozens of essays every year, and teachers will often take home hundreds to read at a time. In addition to loading the teachers with frequently undocumented work hours, it's simply difficult to grade consistently and fairly. Are robo-readers the answer? Mark Shermis at the University of Akron thinks it's at least worth a shot.

Dancing With the Stars Results: Who's First Out?

The first elimination on Dancing With the Stars is always a bit of a dubious honor, but at least here in Season 14, it was a fairly open and shut case.

Martina Navratilova has double faulted her way home.

The tennis legend just didn't take to the jive, and she landed at the bottom of the pack for the second week in a row. It was curtains Tuesday.

Martina Navratilova and Tony Dovolani

"It was an amazing experience," Martina said. "Again, I wish it had lasted longer. I gave it everything I had, but I just blew it yesterday, and it cost me."

Only three points separated her from second-to-last Melissa Gilbert, but that's just too much distance so early. Incidentally, Melissa was safe early on.

Not so lucky, surprisingly, was 20-year-old Roshon Fegan, who finished in second place and still ended up "in jeopardy" with Martina and Gavin DeGraw.

That might be nothing more than the producers' way of shaking things up, but it's also entirely possible that his name hasn't caught on with the masses yet.

Britney Spears can change that fairly quickly if she chooses. Just saying. Anyway, with Martina gone, who will win Dancing With the Stars? Vote below!

Google Revamping Search to Filter Out 'Spam' Sites

Google, hoping to win back some of the goodwill it has lost over the past year, is making it harder for spam sites to?game? the search engine, giving legitimate online businesses a better shot at reaching consumers.

Google?s [GOOG??642.59?? -3.46??(-0.54%)?? ] Matt Cutts surprised attendees at a panel during this month?s South by Southwest conference by unveiling an update to the company?s search algorithms ? which could impact the search results users see.

?

Google Search

?We don?t normally pre-announce changes but there is something we are working in the last few months and hope to release it in the next months or few weeks,? he said. ?We are trying to level the playing field a bit.?

That phrase ? ?level the playing field? ? is one that could be music to the ears of small and medium sized Internet-based businesses, who have complained for years that an overemphasis on search engine optimization has made Google?s results less relevant ? and has cost them money. And it could be particularly beneficial for content sites.

?What Google is trying to do is get rid of spam sites,? says Matt Sullivan, eBusiness marketing manager at Direct Capital. ?People have been creating crappy content with hundred and hundreds of keywords. ? [Now,] if small and medium sized businesses put some thought and value into their website, filling it with content that site visitors will appreciate, then they?ll rank highly.?

Cutts has been called the ?Greenspan of Google? since offhand comments from him are dissected and scrutinized by the SEO world. And his SXSW announcement put that profession on alert.

?We are trying to make GoogleBot smarter, make our relevance better, and we are also looking for those who abuse it,? he said.

The search changes, while notable, are likely not a direct reaction to the company?s PR problems. While Google would not comment further on Cutts? comments, it did note that changes of this sort are typically in the works for a long time before they?re made public.

Although the changes are aimed at improving results for the end user, some IT departments and SEO experts are still grumbling. That?s part of the normal cat and mouse game that?s typically played between Google and those fields.

The site regularly tweaks its search protocols to battle companies who are optimized to rank high on Google, but have little to no useful content. (Those sites are typically loaded with ads and can be immensely profitable for their owners.) In 2010, for example, Google made more than 500 changes to its search parameters ? and another 520 in 2011. At any given time, the company says, Google runs over 200 live search experiments.

?10 years ago, my job was to trick engines into delivering traffic,? said John H. Denny, vice president of marketing for Advance Digital and a 20-year digital media veteran, in a Twitter post. ?Now it?s to trick clients into developing content that users want.?

The changes are likely to be welcomed by most businesses and content companies, since search is still a critical component of discoverability for customers. But as the Internet has evolved over the past six years, Google has lost its lead as the most important online tool for companies.

The rise of social media sites like Facebook and Twitter has negatively impacted search engines among people looking to make a purchase. Rather than searching blindly for, say, a vacuum, many people start by asking their friends. And many businesses have found their products go viral without spending a lot of time optimizing their sites for search engines.

?You can?t go into the online game saying ?I don?t need Google?,? says Sullivan. ?Outside of Facebook, it?s the most visited website. It?s how people are going to find you. But with the way social media has grown so fast in the past five or six years, that?s how businesses will be found in the future.?

Bishops slam Saudi fatwa against Gulf churches

Christian bishops in Germany, Austria and Russia have sharply criticized Saudi Arabia's top religious official after reports that he issued a fatwa saying all churches on the Arabian Peninsula should be destroyed.

In separate statements on Friday, the Roman Catholic bishops in Germany and Austria slammed the ruling by Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz Al al-Shaikh as an unacceptable denial of human rights to millions of foreign workers in the Gulf region.

Archbishop Mark of Yegoryevsk, head of the Russian Orthodox department for churches abroad, called the fatwa "alarming" in a statement on Tuesday. Such blunt criticism from mainstream Christian leaders of their Muslim counterparts is very rare.

Christian websites have reported Sheikh Abdulaziz, one of the most influential religious leaders in the Muslim world, issued the fatwa last week in response to a Kuwaiti lawmaker who asked if Kuwait could ban church construction in Kuwait.

Citing Arab-language media reports, they say the sheikh ruled that further church building should be banned and existing Christian houses of worship should be destroyed.

Archbishop Robert Zollitsch, chairman of the German Bishops Conference, said the mufti "shows no respect for the religious freedom and free co-existence of religions," especially all the foreign laborers who made its economy work.

"It would be a slap in the face to these people if the few churches available to them were to be taken away," he said.

Mufti vs. king?
At least 3.5 million Christians live in the Gulf Arab region. They are mostly Catholic workers from India and the Philippines, but also Western expatriates of all denominations.

Saudi Arabia bans all non-Muslim houses of prayer, forcing Christians there to risk arrest by praying in private homes. There are churches for Christian minorities in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and Yemen.

The bishops conference in Austria, where Saudi King Abdullah plans to open a controversial centre for interfaith dialogue, demanded an official explanation from Riyadh.

"How could the grand mufti issue a fatwa of such importance behind the back of his king?" they asked. "We see a contradiction between the dialogue being practiced, the efforts of the king and those of his top mufti."

In Moscow, Archbishop Mark told the Interfax news agency he hoped that Saudi Arabia's neighbors "will be surprised by the calls made by this sheikh and ignore them".

The Catholic Church has urged Muslim states in recent years to give Christian minorities in their countries the same freedom of religion that Muslims enjoy in Western countries.

There are few Orthodox Christians in the Gulf region, but the Moscow Patriarchate ? which was mostly silent during the decades of Soviet communism that ended in 1991 ? has become increasingly vocal in defending the rights of Christians around the world.

Bishop Paul Hinder, who oversees Catholic churches in the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Yeman, told Catholic news agency KNA that the fatwa had not been widely publicized in Saudi Arabia. "What is worrying is that such statements have influence in part of the population," he said.

Pope Benedict XVI (C) is welcomed by Mexican President Felipe Calderon (R) and his wife Margarita Zavala, upon his arrival at Silao's international airport in Guanajuato, Mexico, on March 23. The Pope arrived in Mexico for his first trip to Spanish-speaking Latin America which will also include a two-day visit to Cuba.

The pope began his three-day visit in the central city of Leon with a festive welcome from President Felipe Calderon after making strong statements aboard his papal plane about Mexico's spiraling drug war.

"We must do whatever is possible to combat this destructive evil against humanity and our youth," he told reporters, referring to the violent conflict between rival drug cartels and the state that has killed 50,000 people since 2007.

"It is the responsibility of the Church to educate consciences, to teach moral responsibility and to unmask the evil, to unmask this idolatry of money which enslaves man, to unmask the false promises, the lies, the fraud that is behind drugs," the pope added.

teikchew has commented on Driving California?s Eastern Sierra Nevada

?You know what?? my brother Steve says to me as we speed north along Highway 395. ?I am not even sure I ever really looked out the car windows when we were kids.?

Steve and I are heading into a part of California that we think we know because we drove through it countless times as boys on our way from Los Angeles to Mammoth Mountain, a ski resort on an extinct volcano in the Sierra Nevada that our father discovered in the 1950?s, not so long after its founder, Dave McCoy, hooked a rope up to the wheel of his Model A Ford and towed the first skiers up that impressive mountain.

As I gaze out the car windows I see, in rapid succession, a train slicing through the valley floor, Joshua trees poking their bony forms into the crisp morning, a dry creek bed, a tawny desert hare. A billboard flashes by: Guns4Us.

No, we have never really looked. We will now. Over the next three days, Steve and I will poke around in some of the most striking landscape to be found anywhere in California: subtle desert, vast lakes, fairy-tale mountains that gradually wear a thicker and thicker frosting of snow. Towns with more stories, nooks, and idiosyncratic museums and shops in them than we ever imagined. Hot springs, warm bread?and some of the best skiing west of the Rockies.

Day 1

Movies, westerns in particular, have long loved this part of California, as we are reminded in Lone Pine, the first town we visit along the state?s fabled Highway 395, which cuts through the Owens Valley and leads up to Mammoth and beyond. At the Museum of Lone Pine Film History we bone up on the Hollywood connection. We get a kick out of Ken Maynard?s chaps (cumbersome), Gene Autry?s boots (snazzy), and the hilariously bejeweled Cadillac Eldorado that belonged to Nudie the Rodeo Tailor, who was born Nuta Kotlyarenko in 1902 in Kiev, came to America in 1913, and proceeded to invent the whole rhinestone-cowboy look.

After lunch at the convivial Alabama Hills Caf?, where the house-made berry pies are so freshly out of the oven the fruit is still sizzling, we check out the saddles and cowboy boots a few blocks away at Lloyd?s of Lone Pine, whose signage consists of a nearly life-size three-dimensional horse, Frosty, rearing up on its hind legs. A local woman watches me make a sketch. ?You missed a memorable New Year?s Eve a few years back when a drunk climbed up and painted Frosty?s balls blue,? she says. ?I bet you wish you could draw a picture of that.?

Back in the car, we drive farther into Inyo County. In Paiute, inyo means ?dwelling place of the great spirit,? and with the vast desert and mighty Sierra Nevada anchoring the landscape to the west, it?s hard not to feel we?re in the presence of something ancient and profound. The area?s history of dislocation certainly contributes to the feeling. I am thinking of the Paiute, who after 1,500 years of residence in Inyo, were driven or killed off by the early settlers; of the settlers themselves, who worked so doggedly to establish bold new lives here; and, in more recent memory, of the 11,070 Japanese Americans who, following the attack on Pearl Harbor, were interned at nearby Manzanar, where Steve and I stop to visit the former relocation center.

In the afternoon light I notice that the desert, which at first I take to be uniformly brown, draws on a far subtler range of taupe, gray, pewter, khaki, silver, and mauve. I have a lot to learn about looking closely at this complex landscape, as I have discovered from my pre-drive reading of a gem of a book, The Land of Little Rain, by the self-taught naturalist Mary Austin, who lived here in Independence at the turn of the last century.

Steve and I swing by Austin?s cozy, gabled house on Market Street before slipping into the Eastern California Museum, where we fall under the spell of local history. We linger over the lamps and tools from nearby mines (and adjacent ghost towns) like Cerro Gordo; the cases full of cinnabar, malachite, garnets, and crystals found in the nearby mountains; and the noteworthy slice from a felled bristlecone pine, whose earliest rings place it and its kind as alive during the reign of Ramses II, which is to say in a remarkable 1246 B.C.

I try to call up to Cerro Gordo, thinking a ghost-town detour might be fun. When I finally get a hold of Robert, the town?s caretaker, he pauses before saying, ?Well, you could snowshoe in, I suppose, but rations are pretty lean by now. The wife and I have just enough for ourselves.? He doesn?t have Jack Nicholson?s trademark drawl, but a mere hint of The Shining is the only prompt we need to stick with our plan.

And so we land at Keough?s Hot Springs and within minutes are into our trunks and soaking in water that has come from nearby springs at 125 degrees before being cooled to 104 degrees (in the small pool) and 89 (in the large one). The appealing celery-green pool house dates back to 1919; its bright aqua and green towels, printed with an Old West font, make a great souvenir for the ladies back home. The combination of steaming water, icy air and a winey picnic dinner send us toppling into (heated) tent cabins and groggily, happily to sleep.

Day 2

In nearby Bishop, we read up on local history at Spellbinder Books, an excellent independent bookseller, and drink several bracing espressos at Black Sheep Espresso Bar in the back. At Cobwebs, an antiques shop, we buy our children arrowheads made of chert and obsidian and small fragile Indian beads sifted out of sand beside a creek in the area. Although I am a confirmed (fish-eating) vegetarian, I glance into the Meat House, the town?s butcher shop, drawn in by the examples of taxidermy above cases that are full of venison, oxtails, and big thick steaks. Down the street, at Culver Sporting Goods, I take in the bait and flies, the reels and caps: the merchandise speaks to me of sleepy, summery afternoons on the Sierra Nevada?s glassine lakes. Less peaceful, to me anyway, are the obummer bumper stickers stacked by the cash register and the T-shirt showing a country fellow pissing into a river: Keep on drinking, L.A., its caption reads. there?s more where that came from. And so the intricate story of the Owens Valley water wars is reduced to a cartoon. That evening, Steve and I have a delicious dinner of local trout at the Restaurant at Convict Lake, which is housed in a former Forest Service garage. Convict Lake?s cabins, it turns out, would have been a far nicer hotel alternative to the utilitarian room we end up in at the Mammoth Mountain Inn, a place I remember from my childhood as splendidly alpine, a sea of paneled wood and buoyant plaid. Now it is essentially a glorified motel?but a perfectly located one at the foot of that great, gorgeous mountain.

Day 3

There are few feelings better than waking up to a day on the slopes at Mammoth, even when they hide under a cover of cloud. We luck into snow that is deep, hard-packed. But by midday the clouds close up into a blizzard that whites out the sky and drives us off the mountain. We take one last blurry run from the top of chairlift No. 3 to the bottom of No. 1?our father?s favorite and, we discover, ours, too.

Change-Management Misconceptions | Business Consulting ...

Change management is a common concept for most organizations. In fact, it?s fairly essential considering our fast-paced world will pass an average bystander in a?millisecond.?Businesses, managers and employees that tend to stand ahead of the crowd and stay ahead of the game are those that seem to master the concept of change management.

Before I get going on my main point, let me briefly define change management. Simply put, it?s the framework for taking an individual, a team, or an entire organization from its current position to a more desirable future position. The goal of change management is really to minimize the negative effects for those enduring the transition. Obviously, the reason why that?s the goal is because if the negative effects are greater than the benefits one believes exist at ?the end of the tunnel,? then more than likely, the change-management efforts will get stopped dead in the their tracks. In order for change to take place, the individual, team and organization have to somehow, someway, believe that making the change is WORTH embracing anything that gets in the way in the meantime.

Now, there are many beliefs about change management. One common ideology is the belief that the best way to get people to change is to create a sense of urgency. Another very common concept that?s been used in this realm is the term ?the burning platform,? which was coined by Daryl Conner. But, the thing is that there?s a massive misunderstanding (in my opinion) when it comes to these ideas. We hear ?urgency? and ?burning platform? ? and our mind immediately jumps to ?JUMP!? I mean, let?s imagine ourselves on an actual burning platform, I?m sure we?d feel a sense of urgency to get ourselves off the platform (at whatever cost, whether we can swim or not, and whether it looks like we?ll live or not). In that moment, what might we feel? FEAR. PANIC. ALARM. How about LIFE OR DEATH? I think so. Well, that?s the problem. ?Urgency? and ?burning platform? don?t need to mean (and maybe were never meant to mean) ?scare the pants off your people, so that they do whatever you tell them to do.? No, no, no. I think we have it all wrong.

Recently, I watched a wonderful explanation by Daryl Conner about what he intended to mean by the ?burning platform,? and I was ecstatic to see we?re on the same page. As you?ll see in his video at the end of this post, it?s more about courage and commitment.

I?ll illustrate my point with an image. You are the captain of a plane (the manager of your team). You want them all to learn how to skydive well (collaborate, use their resources, make cautious, but courageous decisions, land successfully, etc.), so you put everyone in your plane, and head for the heavens. At 14,000 feet, you tell your passengers, ?alright?I?m about to open the door. I?m going to give you five seconds to jump. After six seconds, I?m skydiving out of this plane, and you?re left to fly yourself home if you don?t jump.?

Now, if we had misinterpreted ?the burning platform? concept, we probably wouldn?t have taken into consideration the following:

  • Did we teach them how to put on their parachute pack?
  • Did we educate them on how long they should expect to free fall before activating the parachute?
  • Did we give them lessons on how to handle high winds?
  • Did we instruct them how to turn & twist, in the case they need to adjust where they land?
  • Did we walk them through what to do in the case of an emergency if their parachute doesn?t activate?
  • And lastly, did we help them practice their landing, in order to avoid injury?

-
If we had properly understood the concept, we would have shown our team how to make the jump. And the only way we could have trained them through each of the steps, is if we had actually gone through the process ourselves. That?s the secret of good change-management managers?they don?t scare their teams into something they?ve never considered enduring themselves. Instead, they venture into the foreign territory first. They check it out. And then, they share that experience with their team, in a way that properly prepares the team members to head in the direction of change. Not that the manager needs to know everything, but they need to at least understand what they are asking their team members to do.

Ignorance Is NOT Inspiring.

It takes courage to jump out of a plane. It?s plain stupid to ask others to do it without preparing them. The best way for a manager to execute proper change-management practices within their team, is for the manager to courageously jump first. If a manager doesn?t help his team handle the transition toward change, once his team gets started, how does he possibly expect them to survive the skydive?

More on this tomorrow. For now, check out this video with Daryl Conner, and share your thoughts with us below! What do you think it takes to lead a team successfully through the transition to change?

Inquiry targets 'command climate' in Afghan killings

By Jim Miklaszewski, NBC News chief Pentagon correspondent

The top U.S. commander for Afghanistan told lawmakers?on Tuesday?that an investigation is under way into the command climate surrounding the sergeant accused in the shooting massacre of 16 Afghan civilians. This is separate from the criminal investigation into the killings, allegedly committed by Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales.

Gen. John Allen, in testimony before the House Armed Services Committee, revealed the investigation will look into the command and control process, how?and why Bales was assigned to the Special Operations Village stability mission and what?the combat relationships were within that unit.?

It's expected the investigation will also look into the presence of alcohol on that small outpost in southern Afghanistan and whether there was a breakdown in command leadership in that unit.

Because of the criminal investigation under way, Allen offered no additional information on the suspect, other than to repeat that the U.S. military is committed to seeking justice in the case.
